Dog Bites & Animal Attacks

image.png

A dog bite can leave lasting physical and emotional scars, and the owner should be held responsible. California has some of the strongest dog bite laws in the nation. If you or a child was attacked by a dog or other animal, our attorneys will pursue the compensation you deserve for your injuries, trauma, and recovery.

California's Strict Liability Dog Bite Law

Under California Civil Code Section 3342, dog owners are strictly liable for bites that occur in public places or when a victim is lawfully on private property, regardless of whether the dog had a history of aggression or the owner knew it was dangerous. You do not have to prove the owner was negligent. You only need to show the bite occurred and you were lawfully present.

Common Injuries in Dog Bite Cases

  • Deep lacerations and puncture wounds

  • Facial injuries and permanent scarring or disfigurement

  • Nerve damage and loss of function

  • Infections, including serious conditions such as MRSA or rabies exposure

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder and emotional trauma

  • Injuries requiring reconstructive surgery

Who May Be Liable?

Dog Owners

The owner is the primary party held liable under California's strict liability statute.

Property Owners or Landlords

If a landlord knew a tenant's dog was dangerous and failed to act, they may share liability.

Handlers and Caretakers

Anyone who had custody or control of the dog at the time of the attack may also bear responsibility.

What You May Be Entitled to Recover

  • Emergency treatment, surgeries, and ongoing wound care

  • Plastic or reconstructive surgery costs

  • Psychological counseling and therapy

  • Lost wages during recovery

  • Compensation for permanent scarring or disfigurement

  • Pain, suffering, and emotional distress
